Panchang Glossary

Tithi
The lunar day — one of 30 tithis in a lunar month. Ranges from Pratipada (1st) to Amavasya (new moon) and back. Each tithi has specific qualities affecting activities.
Paksha
The fortnight — Shukla (waxing/bright) or Krishna (waning/dark). Shukla Paksha is generally more auspicious for starting new ventures.
Nakshatra
The lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies today. There are 27 nakshatras, each bringing different qualities to the day.
Yoga
An auspiciousness index calculated from the combined longitude of the Sun and Moon. 27 yogas exist — some (Vishkamba, Vaidhriti) are inauspicious; most others support different activities.
Karana
A half-tithi unit — each tithi has two Karanas. There are 11 Karanas in total. Used for very precise muhurta (auspicious timing) selection.
Rahu Kalam
An inauspicious 90-minute period that occurs once daily. Important activities are traditionally avoided during Rahu Kalam.
Yamagandam
Another inauspicious period, associated with Yama (god of death). Timing varies by day of the week.
Gulika Kalam
Inauspicious period associated with Saturn's son Gulika (Mandi). Avoid important activities during this window.
Abhijit Muhurta
The most universally auspicious muhurta of the day — approximately 48 minutes centred on local solar noon. Excellent for almost any important activity.
